Chancellor Howard Gillman

Over the past 12 months, a renewed sense of hope has slowly and steadfastly returned to our organization. Uncertainty has been replaced with knowledge, interim workforce plans have been retired in favor of permanent solutions, and we reimagined everything with a fresh attitude and an eye towards tomorrow.

We have embraced flexibility as a guiding principle, and with it, the conviction that there is not a one-size-fits-all best way to work. As an organization, we have consciously chosen to make whole person wellness a priority, to ensure a fair, inclusive, diverse, and collaborative workplace, and to recognize that our greatest assets are our people.

Today we celebrate those of you who have reached milestones in service to UCI, the UC system, and related California institutions. 2,403 UCI staff are honored today for their remarkable cumulative total of 21,435 years of service.

A number of those years were served in the unpredictable and often unsettling COVID-19 global pandemic. Your resilience has been nothing short of humbling. When none of us knew what the next day, week or month would bring, you stepped up, ensuring that UCI and UCI Health never faltered. For that, I cannot be more grateful.

We are now stronger than we have ever been. Our strategic plan is being realized, and we continue to educate our students, make life-changing discoveries, and heal our community with the pioneering spirit and resolve that have always defined Anteaters as a university, a health system, and a proud, top-ranked public institution. As core contributors to the success of our organization, you should each be proud of your part in our success. We could not do it without you.

Thank you for your years of service. Together, we move towards our brilliant future.

Fiat lux,

Chancellor Howard Gillman
